Ellie Wingfield: My placement with Run

04 Nov 2024

Over the course of 2024, we have taken on seven different work experience students from a variety of different schools, colleges and universities.

The latest was Ellie Wingfield, a second-year Sports Journalism student from University of Northampton.

With a passion for women’s sport, Ellie reached out to us through the Women’s Sport Collective, and we were delighted to welcome her for two days at the end of October to get a taste for agency life – especially to see first-hand the work we’re doing through our new women’s sport practice, Run x

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous as I woke up on Monday.

I was doubting everything from my outfit to my experience, but after procrastinating what to wear (and eating an outrageous amount of fruit), I shook the nerves off and headed to The Dock Hub.

As soon as I walked into the office, I felt comfortable. All my nerves dissipated. The team were beyond lovely, and I didn’t have to wait long before getting into my work.

My first task of the day was to complete a research task to support Run’s new women’s sport division – Run x. I then started working on a more practical creative task in planning a Halloween themed video to film and edit myself the next day. After a lot of brainstorming (and several conversations with the team that were very welcome), I drafted up a few different ideas. Ben helped me narrow it down to a “who’s most likely to”, so I spent the rest of my first day planning my questions and thinking how I wanted to film and edit it.

Tuesday morning didn’t exactly go as planned (who actually plans to wake up at 5:30am?), but after another morning of procrastination I found myself rushing out of the door for another day with the Run team.

In the taxi on the way to work, I was genuinely quite sad that it was my last day.

Monday was so much fun and was so engaging and I knew Tuesday would be no different. I knew what I would be doing for the day so as soon as I came in, I met some more of the team before settling in to start my tasks.

One thing I was especially nervous for was filming my Halloween video. I reviewed my questions, but I felt very awkward and anxious about it all. I wasn’t quite sure how to approach everyone to ask to film them, but I also didn’t feel especially confident in my filming and editing ability. Even though it was just filming on my phone and despite knowing everyone was beyond welcoming and lovely, I was so scared.

Luckily, Ben volunteered as tribute first and after that, it didn’t feel so daunting anymore. Throughout the day, I pulled people away when/where I could and then my afternoon was full of editing. I didn’t use anything fancy to edit, just simple CapCut and Canva.

The relaxed environment of the office and the welcoming vibes of the team made me feel beyond comfortable and it felt really easy to get through my work. Everyone was so easy to talk to and work with.

I didn’t want to finish my placement because I adjusted so quickly to both the work and the office as a whole. Going back to university to continue my second year, I now feel a lot more confident in my professional ability and my adaptability.
